Every figure on this site is derived from the published rankings and results themselves, not from
an editor's opinion. Rankings refresh weekly, following the OWGR's own Sunday publication.

## Coverage and limits

Stated plainly, because a confident answer built on the wrong assumption is worse than no answer:

- The Official World Golf Ranking began in **April 1986**. Ranking history and tournament results
  start there. Players whose best years came earlier are absent or appear well below their true
  standing — Nicklaus and Palmer are not represented at their peaks.
- **Major champions are the exception** and run to 1860, because that list is a matter of record
  rather than of ranking.
- A blank finishing position means the source recorded no finish. Where a scorecard evidences it,
  the site shows **MC** (missed cut) or **WD** (withdrew); where it does not, the position is left
  blank rather than guessed at. Most historical blanks stay blank for this reason.
- Women's ranking history is shallower than the men's: the Rolex ranking is carried weekly going
  forward, but its archive is not as deep as the OWGR's.
